Warm Ups
9/16/11
Ecology is the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. It can also be called bionomics. It is the interactions between living organisms and non-living things.
9/19/11
An ecosystem is a localized group of interdependent organisms together with the environment that they inhabit and depend on, like a desert, or a coral reef.
9/20/11
If an organism is removed, all the food web would get messed up and eventually balance again, but if all the producers were removed, other organisms would either have to move or die.
9/21/11
Producer -> consumer: Plant -> caterpillar
Predator -> prey: Owl -> mouse
9/22/11
Mosquito -> Mouse
mosquito sucks energy out of mouse
9/23/11
An example of a commensialistic relationship would be squirrels and trees, where squirrel lives in the tree and the tree doesnt' benefit or get harmed.

9/27/11
Intra-Organisms in the same species competing for the same resource (oak tree vs. oak tree, for light)
Inter- Organisms in different species competing for the same resource (tree vs. tree, for light)
9/28/11
The niche of a coyote is to give food to hogs and they have sharp teeth to help consume prey, in order to get energy. They also control their prey's populations.
9/29/11
An invasive species is a species that can either be in producers or in consumers, and invasive species are organisms that when they are introduced to the environment/ecosystem, it causes the ecosystem/ecosystem to lose equilibrium/balance, causing harm to the organisms in the ecosystem. Most of the time, they are put in the ecosystem by force, almost always by humans. An example of that are zebra mussels, which attach themselves to teh bottom of boats, and as boats go to different lakes, zebra mussels reproduce.
10/3/11
A biome is a bunch of ecosystems with similar traits and characteristics. An example would be the desert.
10/4/11
A habitat is the natural home of any organism, and an ecosystem is the interactions between organisms.
10/5/11
Two examples of long term environmental changes are water bottles being thrown in the ocean, and another one is global warming.
Two examples of short term would be a tsunami and also a tornado.
10/11/11
After natural gas began to be used, since no ash was produced, the white moth's population increased, as the black moth's population decreased, this being a result of camouflage, as the black ash began to wear off, making the bark in the trees go back to its normal color. This would be an example of a long term environmental change. The white moth population would have the favorable trait, in this case, and the black moth population will be consumed more than the white moths.
10/12/11
Some ways we depend on the ocean are for water, since it can be boiled and also we depend on the ocean to grow our plants, since waters depend on plants, also, we depend on the ocean for minerals, and oxygen. Humans modify or impact oceans systems by littering it with plastic and contaminating it with chemicals. Artificial reefs is also another thing. Impacts of littering causes populations of species in the ocean to decrease and it causes toxins to get inside the fish's body, and when we humans eat that fish, we get sick, which means that new diseases may come up and kill people.
10/13/11
How does the image above show one way that humans are dependent on ocean systems?
The image above shows that humans depend on ocean systems because we need water (storms) for transportation, and most important, weather, or climate. We get heat and energy from the ocean, and we also depend on the ocean for milder climates. It helps control climate, bringing in precipitation.
10/14/11
Usually, fertilizer, or nitrogen, is added to the ocean by run off to cause a toxic algae bloom. Nitrogen increases the growth rate of the plants. Dead zones are where there is no life. When there's too much algae, the decomposes start breaking it down, and the breaking down takes up a lot of oxygen, and when the amount of oxygen in the ocean drops, then death zones will appear.
