Warm-Ups
1/23/12
What is Geology?
The study of Earth and its processes and materials, for example, the rock cycle.
1/24/12
What is the continental drift theory, why came up with the theory, and what evidence did he use to support his theory?
The continental drift theory is a theory that states that the continents were once together and then they moved to be different continents. Wegner came up with the theory and the evidence used to prove the theory was the fossils found near eachother and the continents could fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
1/26/12
Using your computer describe who Harry Hess is?
Harry Hess was a geology who served in World War II and he is best known for his seafloor spreading. He is also known as one of the founding fathers of the theory of plate tectonics. He studied islands, seafloor gravity abnormalities, etc. and he suggested that the convection of the Earth's mantle was the cause of all the different land forms underwater, which also helped prove the theory of plate tectonics.
1/27/12
They use sonar devices to map the seafloor.
2/1/12
What is the most interesting thing you've learned, and why?
I have liked the crust recycling because it helped me understand why seafloor isn't spreading very much.
2/2/12
Explain how crust is recycled.
When magma comes up into the trenches, and turns into new oceanic crust, it spreads and then subducts into trenches. It melts back down and the process repeats itself multiple times.
2/13/12
What do you know about transform, convergent, and divergent boundaries? Discuss land forms and movement.
-Transform Boundaries
a. create earthquakes
b. side to side movements
c. shearing occurs
-Convergent Boundaries
a. colliding
b. three types: oceanic to oceanic, oceanic to continental, and continental to continental.
c. denser crust always submerges
d. Oceanic to oceanic: island arch
e. Continental to continental: volcanoes
f. Oceanic to continental: folded mountains
g. creates trenches
-Divergent Boundaries
a. creates ridges
b. separates two crusts
c. faults
d. rift valleys
2/14/12
-What supports the theory of plate tectonics?
Glacier deposits, fossil evidence. seafloor spreading, different landforms, climate change, etc.
2/20/12
-What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Erosion: moving of the sediments
Weathering: breaking down of rocks
