What Is Earth's Axis?
*Rotation- spinning on a certain point (axis)
*Revolution- moving around something, circulating of an object*Part IA: Rotation
1. Write your prediction of what you will see if you make one full rotation.
After making a full turn I will be able to see all cardinal directions inside Gollner's classroom. I will be able to see everything in the classroom, each time facing a different cardinal direction.
2. What do you see after making on 1/4 turn? Be sure to mention the compass points.
We faced West
3. What do you see after making another 1/4 turn? Which direction are you facing?
After 1/2 turn, we faced South.
4. What do you see after making a third 1/4 turn?
Next, we faced East
5. What do you see when you make a final 1/4 turn? Did you rotate or revolve? What is your evidence?
We were facing North once again. We rotated because we spun at a certain point, we did not move around any object.
*Part IB: Revolution
1. Predict what you will see when you make a full revolution.
If we make a full revolution, we will only see North, because we will be revolving and not rotating.
2. What did you see as you made on revolution?
Only one cardinal direction-North
3. How was making a revolution different from making a rotation?
When rotating, you only see one direction, and when you rotate, you see all direction
4. What are some examples of things that rotate and things that revolve?
rotate- top of a water bottle
revolve- pencil when drawing a circle, normal Ferris wheel carts.
